Why did you choose to work at Gulmohar Capital Partners (“GC Partners”):
I chose to work at GC partners primarily because of the small firm environment. I knew that I would gain experience at the forefront of the deal-making process, and that I would receive mentorship at every step of the process. The best thing about my work at GC partners is that no day repeats itself. Every day we do something new, and I’m constantly challenged to think critically and adapt quickly to different situations. I have gained insights about industries I would otherwise be clueless about, and I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities of various business models and market dynamics.
What have you learned (& what sort of work did you do) during your internship:
My work revolved around supporting deals anywhere from the pre-IOI stage to the post-LOI stage. The process begins with screening potential deals to make sure they fit our criteria. This includes thorough quantitative and qualitive analysis of the company. If they fit, then we pursue the deal. A significant amount of my time at GC partners focused on deal screening, although I also worked on developing lender presentations, facilitating outreach, and conducting detailed industry research to support our investment decisions. All of my work has felt important, impactful, and has directly contributed to the success of the deals we pursued.
What are your long-terms goals and how did this internship help:
My long-term goals are to secure a role in finance, hopefully private equity or investment banking. This internship provided me with invaluable first-hand experience, training me for future positions. I am unsure if any other position allows for this much hands-on work. At GC Partners, I would not say that I was treated just as an intern, but more as a valued team member. I also gained immense mentorship from Sumit Aneja, Arun Sharma, and David Leal, three veterans in the world of finance.
Any advice for someone looking to enter this field:
Consistency is key! There will be many rejections and roadblocks during your process. Treat every one of these as a lesson to be learned. That way, when the time is right, you will be even more prepared than anyone else. Don’t give up!
